Chapter Twelve

:ENGAGE:

I opened my eyes. Back in the room at the inn.

Zee blew out a breath, stretching his arms and wriggling his fingers as though reassuring himself everything was working normally. He looked the same as before, which was encouraging. I glanced around. Everything else seemed the same as well, including my reflection in the old and dirty mirror. So at least whatever we’d set off with the symbol, it didn’t seem to be messing with anything else.

So far.

"This is where it would be good if we could jump around in the game. But I guess it's another walk to the river," Zee said.

"Yeah. I don't think we have access to anything to get us there faster." I should’ve asked Damon about that. There were nearly always shortcuts built into games that the coders could access easily. There were probably more than most in this version, built for a tournament. It needed to be easy for Righteous to put the teams wherever they wanted them in the world and lock and unlock options and game areas as needed. Along with managing the difficulty levels and all the other differences between the versions the different leagues would be playing.

We walked fast, the sun beating down on us. Apparently practice mode was stuck in the one time of day rather than progressing through time like the game normally would. That made things easier, as we weren't going to have to do this in the dark. Though nighttime might have been cooler. It didn't take long for the sensation of sweat trickling down my back to start being a distraction.

"Which one do you think it is?" I asked when we reached the edge of town. "Random magic or trigger?"

Zee sighed, shading his brown eyes to glance back at the town. Was he worried about someone—or something—following us?

I didn't want to ask. I didn't want to know. I was jumpy enough as it was. I couldn't blame all the sweat on the sun. Some of it was pure nerves.

"Probably a trigger. The Elders don't do these things on a whim. Not anymore. If they are doing something to alert us to their presence, there's a reason."

"Good reason or bad reason?"

"I guess that's the harder part to figure out."

"You're not making me feel better."

He kicked a stone in the road, sending it skittering ahead of us. "I'm not making me feel better either. But the only way to feel better is to work this thing out. So we keep walking."

I humphed at him but did as suggested. "If it's a trigger, it might be in all the games?"

"Maybe. Or as many as whoever it was who set the spell was able to access. That might be useful, you know. Assuming someone did this last night, Damon could search for any of the guests who had more than one turn at the game."

"Unless they glamoured themselves in between. Changed what their appearance."

"Yeah," Zee agreed. "But it's worth a try. None of us noticed any magic last night, so however this was done, it was slick.
